Coming Together for a Greener Future: Thanks to Neighbourhood Network – May 10

Growing Together: The Impact of Neighbourhood Network’s Tree Planting in Newmarket

As your Ward 6 Councillor, I’m proud to highlight a community initiative that has been transforming our town's landscape and spirit: Neighbourhood Network’s Spring Tree Planting program. Since its inception, this program has united residents of all ages to enhance our green spaces, foster environmental stewardship, and strengthen community bonds.

A Legacy of Green Growth

Neighbourhood Network, a not-for-profit organization founded by Magna International, has been instrumental in promoting volunteerism across York Region. One of its flagship initiatives, the Spring Tree Planting event, has seen volunteers plant over 16,000 trees and shrubs in our community. This annual event not only contributes to our urban canopy but also engages residents in meaningful environmental action.

Why Tree Planting Matters

Trees play a vital role in our urban environment. They improve air quality, reduce stormwater runoff, provide habitat for wildlife, and enhance the aesthetic appeal of our neighborhoods. Moreover, participating in tree planting fosters a sense of ownership and pride among residents, encouraging ongoing care for our shared spaces.

Get Involved

This year's Spring Tree Planting event is scheduled for Saturday, May 10th, from 9:30 am to 12:00 pm. In Newmarket, the planting will take place along the walkway beside 991 Oaktree Crescent. Volunteers of all ages are welcome, and high school students can earn community service hours. Pre-registration is required to participate.

Let's continue to grow a greener, more connected Newmarket, one tree at a time.
