Celebrating Canada: A Deep-Rooted Pride in Every Corner of Our Country

Celebrating Canada: A Deep-Rooted Pride in Every Corner of Our Country - By Councillor Kelly Broome

#BeProud

As a proud Canadian, there’s so much about this beautiful country that fills me with a sense of belonging and pride. From our history to our heritage, our people to our landscapes, there’s truly no place like home. Here are just a few reasons why I’m incredibly proud to be Canadian, and why I encourage you to be proud too!

Our Diversity: A True Canadian Strength

Canada’s diversity is one of the most celebrated aspects of our nation. We have a rich cultural mosaic where people from all walks of life, from every corner of the world, come together and contribute to the fabric of this land. This is what makes us strong. Engaging with such diversity demands respect, appreciation, and a welcoming spirit—values that are at the core of Canada’s identity.

Inclusivity: A Country for All

Canada’s commitment to inclusivity is something we should all be proud of. We work hard to ensure everyone feels welcome and valued, no matter where they come from, what they believe, or who they love. Our ongoing efforts to make sure all voices are heard create a nation that truly represents the ideals of fairness and equality.

Terry Fox: A Canadian Hero

Terry Fox's journey is one that continues to inspire us all. Despite facing unimaginable odds, Terry never gave up on his mission to raise awareness for cancer research. His courage, selflessness, and determination are a shining example of what it means to be Canadian. A true Canadian hero, his legacy reminds us that no matter the struggle, we can always do our best with what we have.

Nature: A Beautiful Land to Call Home

From the CN Tower in Toronto to the natural beauty of Riverwalk Commons in Newmarket, Canada is a land of awe-inspiring landscapes. Our wildlife, forests, lakes, and mountains offer us a pristine environment in which to live, work, and raise our families. There’s no place quite like Canada, and I feel lucky to call it home.

Preserving Our Heritage

Canada’s history is rich and diverse. From the streets of our small towns to the iconic Clock Tower (Post Mark Hotel) in Newmarket, we take great pride in preserving the heritage that shapes our communities. Whether it’s our Quaker settlement roots or the legacy of the Mulock Family, we work hard to maintain the stories of those who built this great nation.

Winter: A Canadian Tradition

I’m proud of our winters! Canadians know how to make the most of the cold, and from hockey legends like Bob Forhan and Connor McDavid to Olympic champions such as Gabby Daleman and Rosie MacLennan, we have a long tradition of winter sports excellence. Our pride in these athletes, who inspire us all to push ourselves further, reminds us of the resilience and strength that run deep in our culture.

Celebrating Canadian Talent

We also have an incredible wealth of talent in the arts, from Newmarket’s own Glass Tiger and The Elwins to global superstars like Shania Twain, Alanis Morissette, and Avril Lavigne. And let’s not forget our comedic talents—actors like Jim Carrey, John Candy, Ryan Reynolds, and Mike Myers have made their mark both in Canada and around the world. In fact, Newmarket has also been home to several other distinguished figures, including:

  • Herb Cain, a Canadian professional ice hockey player who played for the Montreal Maroons, Canadiens, and Boston Bruins.

  • Robert Forhan, a Canadian ice hockey player who competed in the Winter Olympics.

  • Danielle Hanus, a Canadian swimmer who has excelled in freestyle and backstroke events.

  • Lindsay Seemann, a Canadian swimmer who represented Canada in the 200-metre backstroke at the 2008 Summer Olympics.

  • Alex Axon, a rising star in Canadian swimming.

  • Stephanie Barrett, a Canadian archer who competed in the 2020 Summer Olympics.

  • Fred Hagan, a renowned Canadian artist and lithographer.

  • Mazo de la Roche, an iconic Canadian author best known for her "Jalna" series.

These individuals, along with others, represent the diverse talent and achievement that Canada has to offer.

Our Canadian Cuisine

Who doesn’t love the taste of maple syrup, poutine, or a classic BeaverTail? Canadian cuisine is as diverse as our culture, and there’s no better way to indulge in the tastes of home than by enjoying these iconic dishes. Whether you’re sipping maple syrup straight from the tap or biting into a crispy BeaverTail, it’s a treat that never fails to satisfy.

Politeness and Kindness

We are known for our politeness. We Canadians take pride in being kind and respectful to those around us. It’s a simple yet profound quality that helps foster a sense of community wherever we go. You can never be too polite, and it’s a trait that binds us together.

The Pride of Newmarket

Above all, I am so proud of my community, Newmarket. The engaged, caring residents, the strong sense of belonging, and the incredible neighborhoods that make this town such a special place to live are at the heart of everything that makes Canada great. From our local heritage to our vibrant present, Newmarket is a true reflection of the Canadian spirit.

Join Me in Celebrating Canada
