Leave your passport at home...
I had to opportunity to experience culture close to home at the 2017 Culture Bridge Festival this past July weekend at our Magna centre. This event free to the public allowed residents to...
“ Leave your passport at home and experience your neighbour’s culture here in your own community.”
Ranji Singh founder and CEO of Culture Bridge Initiatives and a long time resident Newmarket resident of 28 years said…
York Region reported that, by 2031, the seniors’ population will double and the immigrant makeup will grow from 45% to 55%. One can surmise then, that by the year 2031 there will be a significant number of immigrant seniors and elders. With a rapidly growing culturally diverse population flowing into Newmarket and surrounding areas (and thinly distributed across an urban sprawl), there are very few local opportunities for folks of common interest to gather. The result is that many commute out of area for social networking. Many in the immigrant communities will lose the strong out-of-area social connections through reduced mobility caused and declining health through ageing. This in turn will result in isolation.
This event gives our community a wonderful, open, and friendly opportunity to learn about culture around the world right here in our back yard.
I encourage you to follow this event and others brought to our community. Enjoy wonderful food, singing, dancing, demonstrations, along with a very strong presence and support from the York Regional Police Diversity and Cultural Resources Unit.
It was a great event, I look forward to seeing it grow and hope to see you there next year.
