Newmarket Council continues to advance policy to support its priority in environmental stewardship by approving a Private Tree Protection By-law in order to protect mature trees on private property and expand Newmarket's tree canopy.

  1. Council approved an unprecedented agreement with Shining Hill Estates that sets a new standard in sustainable community building, including the transfer of over 80 acres of environmentally sensitive lands to the town for public use.

  2. Council received a presentation on York Region’s draft Official Plan. In response to the draft York Region Official Plan, Newmarket Council is requesting York Region to target a minimum 55-60% intensification rate when it revises its Official Plan in 2022. Newmarket’s current intensification rate is approximately 85%
