Town of Newmarket September 24 Council meeting.
Urban Centres Zoning By-law
Council approved the Urban Centres Zoning By-law at the September 24 Council meeting. Newmarket’s Urban Centres Secondary Plan sets out intensification targets that will see 33,000 jobs and 32,000 residents in our urban corridors along Yonge Street and Davis Drive over the next few decades. The by-law implements the policies of the Urban Centres Secondary Plan at the zoning level, which will help streamline planning processes and make development in this area as smooth and efficient as possible. Members of the public were engaged in the development of the by-law at various stages of the process and feedback from the consultations has been included in the final document.
Council approves plan for more affordable housing options in Newmarket
A Zoning By-law Amendment for the development of three multi-unit residential buildings with a total of 482 units in Newmarket’s urban centre of Yonge Street and Davis Drive was approved by Council at the September 24 meeting. Two of the buildings will be guaranteed rental buildings which will include 31 affordable rental units. The third building will be Newmarket’s first high-rise condominium on Davis Drive. The project will provide more housing options for residents within our community. The Town is now processing the site plan approval for two of the buildings at 175 Deerfield Road (one rental and one condo) and final decisions on the developments will be made by the new Council in 2019.
Union Hotel receives Heritage designation
Council approved a by-law to designate The Union Hotel (425 Davis Drive) as a Heritage Building under the Ontario Heritage Act. The structure (which is at the northeast corner of Davis Drive and Main Street) was built in 1882 and is associated with the early urban development of Newmarket. It is expected that the Union Hotel will find a new life through an adaptive re-use of the building, either as a stand-alone use or as part of a larger re-development concept.
