Road and Utility Preparations

ROAD AND UTILITY PREPARATIONS ALONG YONGE IN NEWMARKET

As part of the vivaNext Yonge Street rapidway project, trees within York Region's right-of-way need to be removed to allow utilities to be moved farther back and the road to be widened. Crews will be working along the corridor from Mulock Drive to Davis Drive.

Some tree removals were completed last year. In an effort to preserve as many trees as possible, we will only be removing trees as needed to prepare for utility relocation and road widening. Trees tagged for removal have been inspected by a certified arborist.

Once construction of the rapidway is complete, the same number of trees will be planted along the boulevards and in the medians as part of vivaNext's landscape plan, which supports York Region's Greening Strategy.

work dates*: Monday, March 14 – Tuesday, March 15
work hours*: 7am-7pm
Short duration lane closures will be required as crews remove trees on the east side, west side, and centre medians of Yonge Street in Newmarket.
At times, sidewalks may be closed to ensure pedestrian safety during tree removal operations. Signs will be in place to direct pedestrians to cross safely at signalized intersections.
Smaller trees will be cut and the wood will be chipped onsite. Larger trees will be loaded into a bin and chipped off site to minimize the disruption. All areas will be cleaned up before moving on to the next location. The wood chips and mulch from the trees will be used for landscaping purposes.
There will be minimal noise and some dust associated with this work.
